INSTALLATION / PERFORMANCE
Recent work has been in the area of performance and installation. Collaboration with a small, changing group of artists and musicians produced 3 works under the collective title, (placebo) UTTER 1-3.
The work addresses strategies for the transgression of, or transaction across, the mortal and the spiritual thresholds. The use of these potentially “impossible” thresholds supplies a resilient framework within which we might engage with the constitution of the threshold itself and with the formal and less formal methodologies we might employ to create the circumstances for, at best, a dialogue – at least, some frisson of proximity to the unattainable. Within these larger threshold paradigms there is of course room to reference many other barriers or transitional states. From biology, cosmology, social hierarchy, metaphysics, philosophy, religion etc. as well as referencing artists from Dante to Duchamp, who have dealt with the separation of realms. The short performance works reduce and abstract this material, creating an elegant and minimal demonstration of intent while toying with other threshold sensitive processes like translation and interpretation.
The performed works were built around pre-existing frameworks from art and social culture:
A demonstration of a fragment of Genet text, describing an old woman trying to question a dead man through the intervention of a medium.
An appropriation and gentle corruption of mortuary practices in various cultures (the final dance of the living with the dead).
A misrepresentation of the consultation of the Oracle, concentrating attention on the position (authority) of the attendant.
The current work in preparation (Venice, December 2016) continues the engagement with proximate intimacy through the use of a separating membrane or screen, and the potential (actual or theoretical) for some kind of significant osmosis of cognition, emotion, substance, between the artist and his / her client, interlocutor, witness, audience.
